Diagnosis-Related Groups
The Diagnosis-Related Groups (DRG) are a system of classification and grouping of patients admitted for hospital treatment. The groups are established based on the combination of: clinical characteristics, surgical procedures and resource consumption. As such, the DRG are clinically and financially homogenous, mutually exclusive groups.
The concept of the DRG developed in the sixties in Yale University in cooperation with the United States Health Care Financing. Currently, more than 20 countries around the world utilize this system. The Institute applies it to measure its hospital productivity, evaluate the results and introduce improvements in its operation. Download the document on this topic
